Writing framework
How BoomWriter supports the writing framework
Helping pupils write with purpose, collaborate with their peers and see themselves as published authors.
A range of writing types
BoomWriter engages pupils in purposeful, collaborative writing across fiction, non-fiction and poetry. It supports the aims of the Department for Education's writing framework by giving pupils opportunities to write in a wide range of forms, collaborate with and learn from their peers, reflect on their writing through assessment, and become published authors with a genuine audience.
Fiction
Genres: fantasy, adventure, historical stories, mystery, science fiction and contemporary realism.
Pupils experiment with different narrative voices, settings and structures while following the same storyline, which gives them practice in planning, drafting and sustaining longer texts.
Non-fiction
Genres: reports, persuasive writing, letters, diary entries, explanations, reviews and balanced arguments.
Projects can be adapted so pupils write for authentic purposes: explaining a scientific process, persuading in a debate, or writing letters linked to curriculum topics.
Poetry
Forms: narrative poems, free verse, performance poetry, haiku and shape poems.
Shared poetry projects encourage creativity, word play and a focus on language choices, and pupils can perform and share their poems with a real audience.
Collaboration, assessment and purpose
Collaborative writing
Pupils contribute their own sections to a shared text, building on each other's ideas and seeing themselves as part of a community of writers.
Peer assessment
Pupils review and vote on each other's writing anonymously, which develops critical thinking, ownership and an understanding of what makes writing effective.
An authentic audience
Finished projects are published as real books, so pupils write for readers beyond their teacher.
Purposeful contexts
Link projects to curriculum themes: historical fiction in history, persuasive letters in geography, explanations in science.
